Qaryat al-Asba - Graffiti Rock Archaeological Site

Brian Robinson December 19, 2023

Embark on a journey through time at the Graffiti Rock Archaeological Site in Riyadh. Nestled amidst the vast desert landscapes, this site offers a glimpse into ancient civilizations through its well-preserved rock art. This travel guide will assist you in exploring the rich history and cultural significance of this remarkable archaeological treasure.

Getting There

Graffiti Rock Archaeological Site is located in the outskirts of Riyadh, about 140 km west near the highway exit for Musayqirah. Turn right after the Restaurant and Mendy of Hadramout, then take the dirt road on the right after 1.5km. The site is accessible by car (2WD), though there was soft sand across a small portion of the track on our visit, so take care! There is a fence and gate, but the gate was open and the fence is missing half way around, so there are no problems getting in.

Exploring the Rock Art

Graffiti Rock is renowned for its petroglyphs, ancient rock carvings that date back thousands of years. The most impressive petroglyph panel is on the northwest of the outcrop, where  you will see hundreds of small figures, mostly dating to the later period. Here you see numerous species of wild animals, including ostriches, as well as camels, battle scenes with cavalry and infantry, date palms and writing. This can be found by heading left through the gate, and making your way up the rocks. Its only a short climb but be careful of your footing!

On the eastern side of the rock, near the top, is what appears to be a Neolithic scene. It depicts extinct wild cattle, as well as humans and “handprints.” Despite the proximity of this site to Riyadh, the Neolithic panel here had not previously been described. This expands the geographic range of Neolithic petroglyphs into Central Saudi Arabia, much farther east than previously known*.

Safety and Respect

Saudi Arabia's climate can be intense, especially in the summer months when we visited! There are a few gas stations along the way, so be sure to stock up on water as there is little shade at the site.

Preservation is key at any archaeological site, so it's crucial to avoid touching the rock carvings, or damaging them in any way. Help protect this historical treasure for future generations by respecting the site and taking your rubbish with you!

Graffiti Rock Archaeological Site is a testament to the enduring legacy of civilizations that once thrived in this arid landscape. As you stand in the presence of these ancient carvings, you'll gain a profound appreciation for the rich history and cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia. Immerse yourself in the stories etched in stone and carry the echoes of the past with you as you leave this extraordinary archaeological site.
