There’s something quietly addictive about photographing Sri Lanka in the early hours. Before the heat settles in and the crowds gather, the island reveals a softer, more intimate side—mist drifting through jungles, golden light brushing ancient rock, and empty trails that feel entirely your own. This nine-day journey wasn’t about ticking off locations; it was about chasing light, again and again, from one landscape to the next.
For in depth details for the safaris, check out my Top 3 Sri Lanka Safaris blog.
Day 1 – Arrival & Transfer to Wilpattu
Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport
Scenic drive north to Wilpattu
Golden hour around the park boundary
Overnight: Wilpattu
The trip began with a long drive north from Bandaranaike International Airport toward Wilpattu, where the road slowly traded city noise for dense forest. The transition itself set the tone—Sri Lanka is a place where the wild always feels close, just beyond the frame.
Day 2 – Wilpattu & Dambulla
Early morning safari in Wilpattu National Park
(Morning Safari - 4X4 Private Jeep: $190 USD)
Drive to Dambulla (Dambulla Cave Temple: $23 USD)
Sunset at Kandalama Lake
Overnight: Dambulla
A morning spent chasing leopards, see more in my Top 3 Sri Lanka Safaris blog. Then a relaxing afternoon preparing for a big morning of hiking! A great chance to go photograph local life.
Day 3 – Sigiriya Sunrise & Minneriya
Pre-dawn hike up Pidurangala Rock
Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress (Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress: $75 USD)
Afternoon safari in Minneriya National Park
(Afternoon Safari - 4X4 Private Jeep: $145 USD)
Overnight: Dambulla
A beautiful sunrise hike up Pidurangala Rock sets the tone, with first light revealing Sigiriya Rock Fortress rising from the jungle. Later, a mid-morning climb up Sigiriya offers a different perspective—brighter, busier, but just as rewarding.
Day 4 – Jungle Morning to Kandy Culture
Stop at Nalanda Gedige Temple
Visit Temple of the Tooth (Entry - $15 USD)
Sunset around Kandy Lake
Overnight: Kandy
Kandy offered a shift in pace, but not in opportunity. Around Kandy Lake, the late afternoon haze softens the city into layers of muted color. Monks move quietly along the water’s edge, and reflections ripple just enough to give images a painterly feel.
Day 5 – Tea Country & Waterfalls
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens (Entry - $25 USD)
Tea plantations and factory visit
Stop at Ramboda Falls
Overnight: Nuwara Eliya
Heading deeper into the highlands toward Nuwara Eliya, the landscapes begin to change. Tea plantations roll endlessly over the hills, catching light differently with every curve. Stops along the way—like Ramboda Falls—offer powerful compositions, especially when framed in the softer morning light.
Day 6 – Horton Plains & Train Journey
Sunrise hike in Horton Plains National Park (Entry - $90 USD)
Reach World’s End early
Scenic train from Nanu Oya to Ella
Overnight: Ella
Starting at dawn, the 10km trek across Horton Plains feels almost otherworldly. The air is crisp, a mix of grasslands and forest, where the light filters through in quiet, diffused layers. Endangered Purple Faced Langur moving through the canopy. Reaching World’s End before the clouds roll in is essential. When the view is clear, the land simply drops away beneath your feet—an abrupt, dramatic edge that stretches into infinity.
Day 7 – Ella & Udawalawe Safari
Sunrise at Nine Arches Bridge
Hike Little Adam’s Peak
Stop at Ravana Falls
Overnight: Yala area
A sunrise hike to the iconic Nine Arches Bridge offers symmetry and structure trapped in the chaos of the jungle. After breakfast a climb up Little Adam’s Peak delivers sweeping views over the hill country, with soft light rolling across the ridgelines.
Day 8 – Yala & South Coast to Galle
Early morning safari in Yala National Park
(Morning Safari - 4X4 Private Jeep: $175 USD)
Sunset at Galle Fort
Overnight: Galle
The historic streets of Galle Fort are best explored early, before the heat and crowds take over. Soft morning light spills across colonial walls, and the textures—weathered stone, pastel facades—become the focus. It’s less about sweeping landscapes now, and more about detail, storytelling, and atmosphere.
Day 9 – Return to Colombo
Coastal drive north
Return to Bandaranaike International Airport
End of journey
