Kazbegi Glacier Hike: Chasing Sunrise in the Caucasus

Brian Robinson September 17, 2026

There are some hikes where the journey itself becomes the story. The Kazbegi Glacier Hike in Georgia was one of those days — an early-morning climb through the Caucasus, dramatic mountain scenery, changing light, and an unexpected four-legged guide who decided to join us for the entire adventure.

We started at 5:00am from the Gergeti Trinity Church parking area, well before sunrise. At that hour, the mountains were still hidden in darkness, and the only light came from our headlamps as we prepared for the climb.

Meet Luna

On the very first incline, something came zooming past us.

It was a dog.

A wonderfully friendly mountain dog who seemed to have places to be, but after passing us at speed, she turned around and came back. We decided to call her Luna.

After a quick introduction — and a little water and a few treats — Luna decided we were now her responsibility. From that point onwards, she led the way.

She would run ahead along the trail, disappear around a bend, then stop and wait for us to catch up. Every now and then she'd come back to check on us before heading off again.

What started as a random encounter on the first incline quickly became one of the most memorable parts of the hike.

The Ridgeline to Kazbegi

From the Gergeti Trinity Church area, we followed the ridgeline path to the right, gradually gaining elevation as the darkness began to lift.

The pre-dawn atmosphere was incredible. With every few minutes, the landscape became more visible — dark ridges slowly separating from the sky and the enormous silhouette of Mount Kazbek beginning to emerge.

For a landscape photographer, this is exactly the kind of start that makes getting out of bed at 4am worthwhile.

As the sun approached the horizon, clouds began moving around Kazbegi Peak. Rather than hiding the mountain completely, they constantly changed the scene, wrapping around the summit and then revealing sections of the peak again.

The combination of mountain, cloud and early-morning light created something different with every few minutes.

Morning Light at Cafe 360

Continuing along the trail, we eventually reached Cafe 360, arriving in the beautiful soft light of the morning.

By now the landscape had completely transformed from the darkness we had started in. The surrounding peaks were illuminated, the valleys were beginning to wake up, and the low morning sun created long shadows across the mountain slopes.

It was a good place to pause, take in the view and appreciate just how far we'd come since leaving the parking area in darkness.

And, of course, Luna was still with us.

Glacier Views

From Cafe 360, we continued just a little further for a glacier viewpoint.

It was one of those moments where the camera almost becomes secondary. After several hours of walking, standing there looking across the mountains was a good reminder of why we had started the hike so early in the first place.

The early start had also paid off photographically. The morning light was still soft, giving the mountains depth without the harsh contrast that comes later in the day.

The Walk Back Down

After spending some time at a viewpoint photographing the glacier, it was time to turn around and head back down.

The return journey gave us an entirely different perspective of the trail. What had been almost completely dark on the way up was now fully illuminated, revealing details we'd missed during the early-morning climb.

And Luna continued to lead the way.

By this stage, she had firmly established herself as part of the group. Whether she belonged to a nearby village or simply made a habit of accompanying hikers, we never found out. But after sharing water, treats and several hours on the trail, she had certainly earned her place in our memories.

A Sunrise Worth the Early Start

The Kazbegi Glacier Hike was more than simply a trek to a viewpoint. Starting at 5am meant experiencing the Caucasus as the landscape slowly changed from darkness into daylight.

From the first appearance of Kazbegi Peak, through the clouds moving around the summit, to the morning light at Cafe 360 and finally the glacier viewpoint, the hike provided a constantly changing series of photographic opportunities.

But perhaps the most memorable part wasn't the glacier or even the sunrise.

It was Luna. Sometimes the best travel stories are the ones you never planned for.

Sunrise Photography on the Isle of Skye - The Low Hanging Fruit

They say "low hanging fruit is there for a reason" — and on the Isle of Skye, that couldn't be more true. Places like the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, and the Fairy Pools are postcard icons, visited by thousands each year. But if you're willing to set that alarm and get hiking before dawn, you'll experience them as they were meant to be seen: quiet, wild, and bathed in the soft fire of sunrise.
